A few months ago, in the midst of a surge forward in my work– bolder strokes, larger palettes, new subject matter—I began to experiment with media. Something deeply exciting has taken root, an almost revolutionary approach in my process: I have begun using reclaimed magazines to paint, not with oils but with paper.

I begin composing with hundreds and hundreds of cut paper pieces, working from dark to light (as with oil painting) and from big shapes to small (as with brushstrokes). I like seeing what I can do with “already made” textures and colors by combining them in unusual ways. From inches away it appears chaotic and not realistic at all, but when viewed as a whole, the effect is representational. I’m still painting every day, with oil paint of course, but I am eager to find out how far I can push this new work and I am excited to see what you think.
